The Travel Apps You Need To Download

Apps are what make our world go round nowadays, aren’t they? With an app for almost anything you could think of. When it comes to the world of travel you can book a trip to the other side of the world completely from your phone including flights, accommodations, visas and activities.

But when it comes down to practicality what are the best travel apps to download? Here are the 8 travel apps I use on all my trips.

Maps.me

App StoreGoogle Play

My absolute must-have for when you travel, as it allows you to download maps by region to access when you’re offline. It’s also useful for picking up walking trails if you don’t want to get lost during your next hike.

XE Currency

App Store Google Play

Such a handy tool to have around if you’re not quite sure of the conversion rate. You can compare multiple different currencies at once and it updates the exchange rates regularly when your phone has wifi/data. I believe you can also use this to transfer money internationally, but I have yet to do this.

City Mapper

App Store Google Play

A great app for navigating public transport, you just tell the app where you want to go and it will suggest routes/transport methods taking in any disruptions that may be on route. Currently in many European and American cities, but are currently expanding all around the world for global travellers.

Airalo

App StoreGoogle Play

Airalo allows you to download E-Sims for data in over 200 countries worldwide. I used this throughout Central America to avoid constantly changing my sim card and I couldn’t recommend it more. Is it more expensive than buying a local SIM? Yes, but if you are visiting multiple countries or need to keep your old sim for verification codes it’s both a time saver and the best option.

Use my referral code HATTIE3208 for $3 off your next E-SIM

Duolingo

App StoreGoogle Play

Feel rude not being able to say a few words in the language of the country you are travelling to? Duolingo allows you to practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing in as many languages as you like. Not only are there 37 languages to choose from, but it is all offered to you completely free.

Although you could just download Google Translate this is a more fun way to learn some basic words and phrases and of course, you could have a translation app as a back up too.

LoungeBuddy

App Store

This is an app for when you find yourself having a particularly long layover in an airport. It will allow you to discover the lounges available to access in the airport you find yourself in. Some lounges can be free, but others may charge in which case the app will allow you to book a slot for the lounge with access to showers, food and other amenities.

FlightRadar24

App StoreGoogle Play

This is for my plane watchers among us, not a necessary app, but one I use every time I’m getting a flight or anyone I know is. You can track planes right above your head or search to see what planes are currently taking off from JFK. I often track loved ones on their flight or use it as an airport game guessing where the taking off and landing planes are going/coming from.

Been

App StoreGoogle Play

One for avid travellers who want to note down the countries and places they have visited around the world. The app gives you statistics on where you have visited and a shaded map of the countries you have been to. Just a little fun way to record your travels.

You will also find all the usual offenders on my phone like Skyscanner, Booking.com, HostelWorld, AirBnB and a few individual airline apps too.
