Advice For A First Time Solo Traveller

There’s no argument about it, solo travel for the first time can be very daunting. Putting yourself in new places, with new people potentially a long way from home can be a shock at first. But it is so worth it, it gives you chance to meet amazing new people and explore the world at your pace and how you wish.

If you are still on the fence about solo travel, read my post breaking down exactly why solo travel is for you. This post however is for the people who have made that leap and booked their first solo adventure and want some honest advice about how to make the most of their trip!

Take time to enjoy the small things

Naturally, when travelling alone, you will have much more time on your hands than a day at home with the distractions of work, family etc. And this is part of the beauty of travel, you have the time to sit there with your morning coffee and watch the world go by, or sit and really enjoy the sunset on the beach. Cherish these small moments when you are by yourself because nothing gives you as much joy as a beautiful moment in solitude.

You will get lonely, but….

There’s no way you’ll go on your solo trip without down moments, but isn’t that just part of life. I won’t sugar coat it loneliness is a battle whilst solo travelling, because somedays travelling by yourself can feel very isolating. However just as quickly as the feelings of loneliness hit you, they are sure to fly away again, once you met a person you just click with or have a lovely interaction with a local.

Be open minded

The best way to travel solo is to do so open-mindedly, you will come across many different types of people and cultures. So leave any preconceived biases at home and allow the room for your opinion to be changed because solo travel will challenge everything you know to be true. The world becomes a lot smaller when you actually get out there and explore, there are a lot of things that connect every human on this planet.

Listen to your gut

When it comes to safety nothing is too cautious when you are travelling alone, especially as a female. I have worn fake rings on my wedding finger to avoid uncomfortable situations and moved on from a place quicker than I planned because something didn’t feel right (not saying you should have to do this). Unfortunately, wherever you are in the world you have to keep an eye out but it can be more daunting when you are in a new place. This is why I 100% advise going with your gut feeling if you feel something is off. But don’t let this scare you away as cautious you have to be, there’s more good than bad apples out there.

Just a few thoughts on how to keep yourself safe whilst solo travelling

  • Let someone know at home where you are and when you will next check in with them.
  • Don’t wander around new areas alone at nighttime
  • Don’t take to many valuables with you and keep them secure when out and about
  • Avoid drinking heavily

Do what makes you happy

You’re the one who makes the decision of what to do every day when travelling solo. So make the most of it and do what makes you happy, not what you think you should be doing or what is expected of you. If that means saying no to the lovely girl who asked if you wanted to hike the volcano for the sunrise because you want to lie in, that’s okay, maybe ask to meet up when she gets back for lunch to hear all about it. Let go of any expectations you have of what it is you should be doing and just do what makes you happy!

You are about to embark on the best adventure of your life. Good luck!
