A Relaxed Morning in Coyoacan, Mexico City

Coyoacán is a vibrant, colourful and art-driven neighbourhood located south of the centre of Mexico City. Known famously as the birthplace of Frida Kahlo, it’s also one of the oldest neighbourhoods in CDMX and you have to stop by whilst you are in Mexico City.

How To Spend a Relaxed Morning in Coyoacan

We were based in Roma during our stay and opted to get an uber which cost us 120 pesos (£5.21), it is possible to get the metro but my understanding the station in Coyoacán is quite a walk from the main attractions.

We arrived at the main square, Plaza Hidalgo around 10ish and immediately the neighbourhood had a very different feel to the rest of CDMX. The buildings surrounding us were vibrant and had a much older style than what we had seen so far.

In the hunt for some breakfast and a good people-watching spot, we found ourselves in the lovely cafe of Cabo Coyote, just on the corner of Jardín Centenario.

I absolutely loved it here for two reasons, our lovely waiter was the kindest, cheeriest man I encountered during our whole stay in Mexico City and also I got my coffee refilled every time it was getting low. Combine never-ending coffee with people-watching and good food and great service, I don’t know what else I needed.

After we were fed and caffeinated we stop at our first sight which was San Juan Bautista Church, you can’t miss this as it towers over Plaza Hidalgo. Over 500 years old the church is full of history and free to go into, so definitely take a look around.

After snapping a photo of the very tourist Coyoacan sign in Plaza Hidalgo we then headed around the nearby streets, taking in the vibrancy of the neighbourhood and stopping regularly to see the many street art murals.

Our final stop of the morning was the Mercado Artesenal Mexico, which is packed full of stalls of souvenirs from local artists. Also as you go under the arches photographed above, don’t miss the beautiful murals painted onto the walls.

Before heading back we spent some time just sitting on the benches of Plaza Hidalgo watching the world go by, the perfect way to end a perfect morning.

I would love to return to Coyoacan maybe take a walking tour and also stop by the Frida Kahlo museum, we were unable to do this as you can’t buy tickets at the museum you need to have already purchased them online. Follow this link to purchase them.

I think a walking tour would be the perfect way to find out more about this neighbourhood. I found the below in Coyoacan, just remember they run on tips, so give what you can! The meeting point is the Ticket office – Viveros/Derechos Humanos Station (subway).
